Why We Travel

I was bitten by the travel bug after my first international trip, to Cozumel, Mexico. It was the dead of winter in the Upper Midwest of the U.S., and I will never forget that soul-soothing sensation of stepping off an airplane into golden sunshine and moist, tropical warmth. I could smell the salt in the air. And the first time I saw the Caribbean–through the open hotel lobby at Sol Cabanas del Caribe (now closed)–the colors were so new to my eyes that my mind had no course but to believe it was a mural.

That experience shifted the camera for me, and since that day, I have always sought out opportunities that give me a new point of view: on food, on life, on humanity, on what it means to be a good steward of this planet and its people. I fully believed at some point that the travel bug would be satisfied; to date, the bite has grown into a welcome infection that seemingly has no cure. The more I travel, the more I hunger for it.

Why do you travel?
