I love this image – two robins have hatched, and two are on the cusp of their greatest adventure: life.

I took this photo while standing a safe distance from them, so as not to disturb the nest. This moment took place on a spring day a couple of years ago in our backyard in La Crosse, Wisconsin. A robin had built a nest on our old garage, which was scheduled to be demolished at the demand of the city. The vines in the foreground offered them some shelter for their home, perched upon a hose hanger.
It seemed poignant. While some people hated that old ramshackle garage, someone else saw it as the perfect place to raise their most precious babies. It made me realize the beauty in something that had been to that moment, a burden.
