Last Turn Saloon in Brainerd, Minnesota: Step Into Yesteryear

As I’ve mentioned previously, the Last Turn Saloon in my hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota is one of my favorite watering holes in the world.

To get there, patrons descend from street level down an old staircase into a warmly-lit room rich in wood tones and brick.

Tuck into one of the establishment’s hidden nooks for a more intimate conversation. If you’re really lucky, maybe you can nab a tour of the Last Turn’s hidden past (it was established in 1894), a speakeasy under the main level. I got a glance of it just once, and in the dim light, standing on the dirt floor and breathing in the musty air, I saw overturned chairs and an old spinning wheel. Super cool.

Patrons in the know grab a bowl of complementary peanuts and popcorn, and scatter the shells and old maids on the floor where they can jockey for space among the spent pull tabs.

To amp up the seasonally cool factor, know that some say the Last Turn Saloon is haunted. I just know it’s one of my favorite haunts.
